December marked a milestone in the field of nuclear risk information regulation when the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) granted Southern Company’s Vogtle Nuclear Plant Units 1&2 permission to implement 10 CFR 50.69 on site. In 2004, the NRC published this voluntary regulation as a means to allow nuclear plants across the country the opportunity to utilize a risk information approach to maintenance and testing efforts. This code stems from the Probabilistic Risk Assessment Policy Statement the NRC produced back in 1995.
Plant Vogtle will be the first plant to utilize this ruling and their team has been busy with program development and training for the past two years in preparation of an efficient roll-out of the program. Industry experts are hopeful that other utilities will follow Southern Company’s footsteps taking lessons learned from their pilot program and implementing this ruling at plants around the country.
