In its latest progress report regarding the completion of Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2, The Tennessee Valley Authority has indicated the unit is 90 percent complete, with some important testing on the horizon. Once operational, the unit will produce the very first U.S. new nuclear generation of the 21st century.
The team recently completed Open Vessel Testing on July 1, 2014, and is now reassembling the reactor in order to prepare for Cold Hydrostatic Testing, an additional major milestone test. Furthermore, Watts Bar Unit 2 will be the first U.S. nuclear plant to meet NRC Fukushima FLEX standards, developed after the 2011 tsunami and earthquake nuclear plant event in Japan.
Thus far, the project has stayed within budget, estimating the total cost between $4.0 and $4.2 billion. Experts expect commercial operation to begin in December 2015.
