Residents who had been living and working within the Japanese town of Kawamata may now return to the area to begin reconstruction activities. Kawamata was originally evacuated during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident in 2011, and is now the last evacuated municipality to be redesignated.
The Japanese Prime Minister stated, “I believe the restoration process of Fukushima has now reached a new starting point towards realization of the return of residents." Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) has now lifted daytime restrictions to the Kawamata area, northwest of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
