Last week, NRC Chairman Allison Macfarlane and several senior NRC officials were in Japan to attend a meeting on improving safety at nuclear facilities as well as take part in the gathering of global nuclear regulatory officials in Koriyama City.
While in Japan, Macfarlane and her group of NRC officials visited the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini sites, praising plant workers for their enormous efforts during the catastrophic events that resulted from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that occurred on March 11, 2011.
The tour of the facility helped offer a “sense of what you went through” and “what you learned. All regulators need to learn these lessons,” said Macfarlane following her visit to Japan. She also called them “true heroes”, praising them for their selfless actions during and after the crisis.
Donning multiple layers of protective equipment, Macfarlane and the other individuals on the tour visited several areas on site including reactor 4, which was heavily damaged by one of several hydrogen explosions that occurred during the March 11 events.
